Frequently Asked Questions
Teeth whitening is actually a science-based process that removes stain molecules from within the tooth.
One of the biggest misconceptions about teeth whitening is that you can choose any shade you want. In reality, whitening can only brighten your teeth back toward their natural potential. Everyone's starting shade and final result will be slightly different.
Over time, our teeth absorb stains from everyday consumption, including coffee, tea, red wine, dark-coloured foods, and smoking. These stain molecules become trapped within the dentin, which is the layer located beneath the enamel.
Professional teeth whitening uses peroxide-based whitening gels that release reactive oxygen molecules. These oxygen molecules travel through the enamel and into the dentin, where they break apart and oxidize stain molecules. Once the stains are broken down into smaller particles, they become less visible, resulting in a brighter and whiter smile.
At U Whitening, our professional whitening systems are designed to maximize stain removal while minimizing sensitivity, helping clients achieve a noticeably brighter smile in as little as 60 minutes.
Very similar! Both systems use professional-grade peroxide whitening gel and an accelerator to enhance results during your appointment.
The main difference is the technology used to activate the whitening gel. Traditional Zoom systems are heat and light based, which can increase the likelihood of post-treatment sensitivity for some patients. At U Whitening, we use an advanced ultrasound-assisted whitening system that eliminates the need for heat while still delivering powerful whitening results.
This allows us to provide a more comfortable whitening experience with minimal to no sensitivity for most clients. Depending on your starting shade and stain level, results are often comparable to, and in some cases exceed, those achieved with traditional Zoom whitening systems.
If you've had Zoom whitening in the past, you'll find the process familiar, but many clients appreciate the comfort and reduced sensitivity of our approach.
It depends on the type of restoration.
Crowns, veneers, bridges, and older composite fillings cannot be whitened in the same way as natural teeth. While professional whitening can remove surface stains and brighten their appearance slightly, the restoration itself will not change shade like a natural tooth.
Newer composite fillings made with modern universal shade technology may respond differently, but results can vary depending on the material used and when it was placed.
As a general rule:
✔ If your crown, veneer, or filling is lighter than your current natural tooth shade, you may be a great candidate for whitening. We can often brighten your natural teeth to better match the restoration.
✔ If your restoration currently matches your natural smile, whitening is usually only recommended if you plan on replacing the restoration afterward. Most patients wait 2-4 weeks after whitening before having new restorations matched to their brighter smile.
✖ If your restoration is darker than your natural teeth, whitening is generally not recommended. Whitening would make your natural teeth even brighter, causing the restoration to stand out more.
Not sure if you're a candidate? Simply send us a photo or book a consultation and our team can help determine the best option for your smile.
Yes. In accordance with Health Canada guidance, our whitening products are intended for clients aged 12 years and older.
Clients between the ages of 12 and 18 are welcome to receive treatment; however, a parent or legal guardian must provide consent prior to the appointment. We also require a consultation to ensure the client is a suitable candidate for whitening treatment.
If you are unsure whether you or your child is a candidate for professional teeth whitening, our team would be happy to answer your questions before booking.
Pre-payment has become increasingly common among high-quality service providers and appointment-based businesses. In 2026, many clinics, spas, and cosmetic service providers require either a deposit or full payment at the time of booking to help reduce no-shows and last-minute cancellations.
At U Whitening, our appointment times are reserved specifically for you. Our team has completed advanced whitening training and is dedicated to providing a professional, personalized experience for every client. Requiring pre-payment allows us to protect appointment availability and continue offering exceptional service.
Pre-payment also gives clients access to flexible payment options, including Shop Pay Installments, Sezzle, and Klarna, allowing you to spread the cost of treatment over time if desired.
If you arrive for your appointment and our consultation determines that you are not a suitable candidate for whitening treatment, you will receive a full refund.
Most people are great candidates for professional teeth whitening; however, there are some situations where treatment may need to be postponed or modified.
You may not be a candidate if you have:
- Active tooth decay (cavities)
- Significant chips, cracks, or holes in your teeth
- Poor oral hygiene or heavy tartar buildup on the front surfaces of your teeth
- Full dentures
- Active braces or Invisalign attachments
There are also certain situations where we simply need to be aware before your appointment:
- Light-induced epilepsy: Whitening may still be possible, but we may need to use an alternative whitening system.
- Pacemaker or certain medical devices: Whitening may still be possible, but we may need to adjust the equipment used during treatment.
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding: There is currently limited research regarding whitening during pregnancy. While no specific safety concerns have been identified, treatment is a personal decision and should be discussed with your healthcare provider if you have concerns.
If you're unsure whether you're a candidate, our team is happy to review your smile and answer any questions before booking.
